GD “K&K 600 Road THP”

40 Acres
North Fork Mad River
Newly filed, Under Review
This plan entails road building and logging the “Right of Way”. There are no units. As Green Diamond puts it, “This THP is only for the construction of new roads and the reconstruction and reopening of existing roads.” The purpose for this is to open the area to log trucks for future clear-cutting.

Section 4 of the THP indicates that GD plans to log nearly 2,000 acres in this area in the next 8 years. 1,741.7 acres of this would be clear-cutting. The future logging units are outlined below in pink.
They propose 4.5 miles of new road construction which includes clear-cutting 75 ft. wide swaths of forest. They call for an additional 8.2 miles of road reconstruction and reopening which allows them to log roughly 25 ft. from the roadsides.
The forest in this area is roughly 50 years old, much of it was logged by Green Diamond when they were previously known as Simpson. The past logging operations (1950-60s) left numerous shoddy bridges, Humboldt crossings and culverts that are now failing.

Green Diamond will likely try and justify the road work from an ecology standpoint by saying that they are trying to prevent more sediment from entering the stream by fixing their road, but 1,741.7 acres of new clear-cuts is unjustifiable.
