Since the onset of commercial logging in the 1800’s, 98% of the Ancient Redwoods were cut down under the order of timber barons. Much of what grew back, the “second growth”, has been clear-cut as well. Green Diamond, formerly known as Simpson, continues the practice of clear-cutting to this day. We want to put this short sighted and terribly destructive practice to an end.
Here is some historic footage of the destruction of majestic Ancient Redwood groves. The second video shows Simpson logging in the late 50’s. This was a time of booming business for timber giants, which spelled doom for hundreds of thousands of acres of Oldgrowth Redwoods.
In the McKay Tract we are defending second growth Redwood forest that is over 100 years old. There are also scattered Ancient Redwoods in this forest, some of which could be over 1,000 years old.
